- TEN REASONS WHY THE 80's WERE BETTER
- on the third night, and then a fourth day devoted to country. The brainchild of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, what I remember most about the festival was that up-and-coming bands like Wall Of Voodoo, Missing Persons and the Clash all got paid HUGE bucks to perform. While the entire festival, which took place in both 1982 and 1983, was filmed, precious little of it has ever seen the light of day since. I think Triumph is the only band to have officially released their US Festival performance, but You ...

- New Stan Ridgway - Neon Mirage and Rare Free MP3s
- The greatest American singer/songwriter/guitarist/storyteller/man about town/humourist you've never heard of, Stan Ridgway, recently unleashed his newest album, Neon Mirage. You have probably heard of his former band Wall of Voodoo's Mexican Radio, but the guy's been putting out amazing solo albums now for 24 years. Please give him a listen, buy some of his stuff, I dearly want him to continue making music. - Wall of Voodoo - The Index Master (from Ink19)
- If you need one record to illustrate "new wave," this is it. This beautifully remastered disc is essentially the first EP from Stan Ridgeway's Throbbing Wall of Voodoo. (They dropped the "throbbing" so they could get their name on the Whiskey's Marquee.) Ridgeway's vaguely nasal vocals ride high over the chunky guitars and cheesy electric organ, painting a backdrop for film noir lyrics and a sense of urban foreboding. "Long Arm" was the first song of theirs I ever heard, and it reflected the col......

- Book Notes - Adam Langer ("The Thieves of Manhattan")
- Germany, turned me on to Die Toten Hosen a long time ago. She's really not a fan of the music, but I still am. "Susie Before Sunrise," Stan Ridgway For me, no songwriter encapsulates the ironic noirish sensibility of Thieves better than Ridgway, the former frontman of Wall of Voodoo. His best songs, which for me include "Don't Box Me In," "Going Southbound," and "Peg and Pete and Me," work like concise, pulpy short stories. Whenever I hear this song, I imagine a closing shot of a movie followed ...

- TERRELL'S TUNEUP: RIDGWAY'S NEON MIRAGE
- A version of this was published in The Santa Fe New MexicanAugust 27, 2010Even before he formed Wall of Voodoo back during the New Wave scare, Stan Ridgway had a cinematic perspective on the music he makes. Many of his songs — the instrumental "Heat Takes a Walk," epic meditations like "My Beloved Movie Star" — sound like they were ripped from celluloid. Even some of his albums, the noirish The ...

- ArpLine – “Fold Up Like A Piece of Paper” (Video)
- "Fold Up Like A Piece of Paper" from unsigned Brooklyn band ArpLine is a noise-pop anthem hopped-up on cocaine and channels the less goofy elements of '80s bands like Wall of Voodoo and Split Enz with a dose of Industrial. Works for me. ...

- Wall Of Voodoo’s Stan Ridgway Unveils ‘Neon Mirage’
- All things considered, it seems somehow strangely fitting that the tour supporting erstwhile Wall Of Voodoo frontman Stan Ridgway's upcoming Neon Mirage album should find him performing in New York City on September 11th. Ridgway's latest solo outing is, after all, a document of a tragic time that saw some key people in the L.A. singer/songwriter's life depart this mortal vale. On his first solo album since 2004's Snakebite, Ridgway maintains the same sardonic outlook and colorful style that ...

- Celtic Frost - Into The Pandemonium
- tastefully to enhance the music and are not the true basis of the songs . . . the songs are still rooted in detuned, sludge-y, and dark heavy metal. The textural embellishments act more like visual effects to enhance the story of a movie like Star Wars rather than the sole purpose of the song. They're the color of a spectacular painting. The album opens with a monstrous and brutal rendition of Wall of Voodoo's alt-pop classic, "Mexican Radio," and we, as listeners, get that opportunity to both raise our ...

- Kevin Feige Teases Nerds, Talks 'Black Panther,' 'Iron Fist,' 'SHIELD' And Other Superhero Movies
- It's amazing that the nerdiest of us were once sitting around boom box radios listening to Wall of Voodoo and Devo and debating what superheroes would make great movies and who would play them, feeling that none of these movies would ever happen. And while we stood fast that Clancy Brown would be a great Sabretooth and that they can never make a superhero movie with a character that has a flaming ...

Formed in Los Angeles in 1982 by singer Johnette Napolitano and guitarist James Mankey, the band was originally called Dream 6 until Michael Stipe suggested they change their name to Concrete Blonde. Bloodletting was the band's third album which, in addition to "Joey" (written by onetime Wall of Voodoo singer Andy Preiboy), found Modern Rock radio success with the LP's title track -- that has since been used in more than one Vampire movie/TV show over the last 20 years. Everybody was cool as hell. There were one or two ball busters, but all in all people were cool. - Wall Of Voodoo - Call Of The West (from Mojo)
- In 1982 Wall Of Voodoo's rare frontman Stan Ridgway called their songs "a bunch of little Twilight Zones strung together". Not a bad way to approach this anti-sunbathing Los Angeles group's admirably unclichéd sign-off Call Of The West. A suspenseful travelogue full of twists, shadow and ambiguities, it also perplexes with its musical palette; Ridgway's mordant, sung-from-the-corner-of-his-mouth vignettes of paranoia, pessimism and alarm are accompanied by synths and drum box set to "malarial",......

- Photo: Diamond/Getty "New Orleans is the soul of America," Gil Cerezo of Kinky declared. The dance rock band from Monterey, Mexico, was onstage and finishing up the first weekend of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell in exhilarating fashion, merging Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" with their own. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Jazz Fest, a two-weekend-long celebration of what festival producer Quint Davis refers to as "the heritage of jazz." This weekend ...

- Capitol Records to Reissue I.R.S. Records By the dB’s, Tom Verlaine
- Starting February 10th, Capitol Records will dig deep into the I.R.S. Records vault and begin making some of the now-defunct label's most acclaimed music available digitally for the first time. Gary Numan, the Police's Stewart Copeland, Television's Tom Verlaine, Wall of Voodoo, Timbuk 3, Concrete Blonde and many more artists are slated to have their I.R.S. recordings released DRM-free. We're especially excited for the digital release of dada's alternative classics Puzzle and American Highway ... Flower. But the really big news is that the digital world will finally, legally, be able to download the dB's influential first two albums, Stands For Decibels and Repurcussion, as well as their fourth album Sound of Music. Plus seven songs by the punk supergroup Lords of the New Church, featuring the Dead Boys' Stiv Bators, will also hit iTunes, Amazon and most other digital music providers. Capitol will release the I.R.S. albums over the course of six weeks, culminating on March 17th. Additionally ...

- Wall of Voodoo - Call of the West (from Robert Christgau)
- Those who believe synth-pop means that the end is near should cf. WoV's 1980 EP, which gave no hint they were capable of tunes as neat and witty as "Mexican Radio" or "Lost Weekend." Maybe soon vocalist-lyricist Stanard Ridgway will fall in love with a human and start pretending he's a nice guy....
