Comment:
Van Morrison proves himself to be rock's version of basic black - dress him up or down, he fits right in, no matter the musical setting. The Band's Richard Manuel and the Belfast Cowboy trade bluesy, boozy shout-outs in "4% Pantomime," as their Johnny Walker wisdom flows like the muddy Mississip. Morrison and the Chieftains invent their own genre - the shamrock soul spiritual - in "Irish Heartbeat," originally cut by Van solo with most of the heartbeat, but not nearly all the Irish. And Georgie Fame, whose career as the British Johnny Otis didn't quite translate Stateside, unlocks Van's inner Sinatra in a Vegas showroom swinger's workout of "All Saints Day." Morrison might be the only artist with the mad skills and the mad sense to record with artists from Pink Floyd's Roger Waters to soul genius Ray Charles, and we have them all - and more - here.
